What is a bond?

A bond is a debt security. It is the loan agreement between a bond issuer (borrower) and a bond investor (lender). When you purchase a bond, you are lending money to a Government, a corporation, or other entities known as issuer. In return for the loan, the issuer promises to pay you a specified interest rate during the life of the bond and the principal returned to the bondholders upon maturity of the bonds.
